Hello there – I’m updating this post in November 2025.

I just want to say, I’m so glad you’re here. If you’re reading this post, it would make sense that you might be wondering what happens in your first counselling session.

Taking that first step to seek counselling can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, especially if you’re not in a good place or struggling with anxiety. As an integrative therapist, I personally love working with people who are new to therapy – I can recognise how strange, weird and mysterious it can all seem if you’ve never done anything like this before. Hopefully this blog post will help shed some light on what happens when you’re booking your first session.

I want to give you a glimpse into what happens during your very first counselling session. And even before that takes place! Rest assured, it’s all about creating a comfortable and supportive space for your journey.

Step 1 – The Initial Contact:

Our journey begins with a simple phone call. You can either call or book a call when it suits you. We’ll begin by discussing what has led you to seek counselling and whether you’ve had any previous experiences with it. This is the time to share your expectations and any concerns you may have. Whether you prefer face-to-face sessions or online meetings, we’ll make sure to choose the option that suits you best. This initial call is also a chance for you to find out if you get on with me, and think I’m a good fit for you or not.  It lasts around 15 minutes. There’s no pressure to commit to anything.

Step 2 – Paperwork for First Counselling Sessions:

After our initial chat, I’ll send you all the necessary details regarding what happens in your first counselling session. You’ll have the location for face-to-face sessions, or a link for a video call, as well as a digital copy of the counselling agreement. Don’t worry; I understand that signing documents can be a bit daunting. You have options! You can digitally sign the agreement using a PDF signer of your choice, or you can email back with the details and a written agreement. If you need a paper copy, this can be arranged too.

Step 3 – What Happens in Your First Session:

Now, let’s dive into your first session. We’ll normally expand on our initial consultation, and you lead the pace and depth of the session. Sometimes, we might use simple questions or paper assessments to gain a clearer understanding of where you currently stand in your journey.

Step 4 – Conversation and Planning:

If time permits, we’ll engage in a meaningful conversation about your experiences and emotions. Together, we’ll move through this, getting to know each other. We’ll also schedule your next session at the end of our time together.

Step 5 – Building the Relationship:

As we move forward, we’ll continue to build a relationship. Counselling is a collaborative effort, and your comfort and well-being are my top priorities. Over the next few sessions, at your pace – we’ll delve deeper into your concerns, work through challenges, and explore ways to help you thrive.

Remember, you’re not alone on this journey. This process isn’t about having an expert who will tell you what to do, but a human who will sit with you, and support you every step of the way. Your counselling sessions are your space for self-discovery, growth, and healing. You get to use them to do what feels right for you.

I hope this helps you to feel a little more confident about what that initial stage might look like. If you’d like to reach out and get started, click here
